Liverpool took the lead in the 29th minute after a defensive mistake by Villa gifted Salah an easy opportunity, which he converted with ease. This goal was Salah’s 15th away goal in the Premier League this season, setting a new record for Liverpool.
However, the advantage was short-lived as Youri Tielemans brought Aston Villa level just nine minutes later. Liverpool struggled to clear their lines, and Tielemans capitalized on the loose ball inside the box, slamming it into the net.
Watkins Puts Villa Ahead Before Half-Time
Villa continued to press forward, and their persistence paid off in first-half stoppage time. Ollie Watkins connected with a perfectly placed cross from Lucas Digne, guiding a precise header into the bottom right corner. The goal sent Villa into the break with a 2-1 lead, leaving Liverpool with work to do in the second half.
Alexander-Arnold’s Equalizer and Missed Chances
Liverpool responded quickly after halftime, finding an equalizer in the 61st minute. A swift counter-attack saw Salah get past Digne before setting up Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose shot took a deflection off Tyrone Mings and wrongfooted Emiliano Martinez.
Despite Liverpool’s efforts to regain the lead, they missed golden opportunities. Darwin Nunez had the best chance of the game in the 69th minute, but he astonishingly blasted his shot over the bar from close range after Dominik Szoboszlai unselfishly set him up.
Villa Push for a Winner But Settle for a Draw
Aston Villa pushed hard in the closing stages, creating several chances. Jacob Ramsey thought he had secured a late winner, only for his goal to be ruled out for offside. Morgan Rogers and Donyell Malen also came close, but their efforts failed to hit the target.
The result means Liverpool’s lead at the top could be cut to five points if Arsenal wins their game in hand. Meanwhile, Villa once again showed their ability to compete with the top teams but remain inconsistent, making their hopes of Champions League qualification uncertain.
