Richard Nyamah, Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged Ghanaians, particularly political activists, not to politicize the work of Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare in his mission of preventing crime in the nation.
This comes after the police attempted to arrest Madina Lawmaker Francis-Xavier Sosu for allegedly participating in a violent protest.
Mr. Nyamah added that Mr. Sosu, as the leader of his constituency, is responsible for anything untoward that occurred during the demonstration.
He questioned why, if the Madina MP had nothing to hide, he did not go to the police to present his side of the story when he was summoned by the authorities.
Mr. Nyamah believes that if the MP had accepted the police’s request to present his version of what transpired during the demonstration, all of this commotion surrounding his detention would not have occurred.
He questioned the law governing parliament, which states that “a member of parliament cannot be detained while parliament is in session.”
Mr. Nyamah believes that MPs are overextending their parliamentary rights; he believes that once parliament is in session, legislators “have a free ball to do whatever they like in the country.”
He said that the claim that Mr. Sosu’s participation in the protest pertains to his legislative obligations is very wide and that there is a need for constitutional interpretation into the matter for clarification.
Mr. Nyamah said that such constitutional interpretations would serve as a guide for MPs and the general public in understanding what the law says on the matter.
Mr. Nyamah was addressing in the aftermath of a police manhunt for Madina MP Francis Xavier Sosu for his role in a demonstration in his constituency that culminated in some participants erecting roadblocks on October 25.
“The issue is that the man has started and he is doing a lot and all of us are happy with it. For once, let’s take out these political innuendos from it, when he arrested a pastor, we had both sides of the political divide bashing him and both sides praising him. Must everything in this country be reduced to NDC and NPP? He has at least shown to us that he means business, so for me let’s take out that aspect”.
