The Laser and Fibre Optics Centre at the Department of Physics at the University of Cape Coast has held an exhibition on light as part of activities to mark this year’s International Day of Light.
The programme which hosted scientists from Ghana and other countries, officials from the Ghana Commission for UNESCO and students was aimed at promoting international cooperation in the basic sciences and Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics education to render science, technology and innovation accessible.
Speaking at the event, the Dean of the school of physical sciences, Professor Emmanuel Essel stressed the need to celebrate International Light day across the country to make people better appreciate the important role light plays in the survival of mankind.
He further urged the younger generation of students to take keen interest in science education to better position them to lead the charge in technological advancement.
He stressed that “once you train your mind scientifically and mathematically, you are capable of surviving under any circumstances and under any conditions because you know how science and mathematics is needed on this earth surface. My advice is that yes, it is good to learn the arts, business and others but let our attention also go to science because it will help us with our survival on this earth”.
