The four labour unions in the public universities in Ghana that embarked on strike action on October 17 have called off the strike action indefinitely.
As such, union leadership is asking members to resume work with immediate effect.
This was contained in a press release dated 14th December 2022 and signed by the leadership of the unions which includes the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Tertiary Education Workers Union (TEWU), Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).
The strike action which lasted for 8 weeks was due to the rejection of a “suggestion” by the government as regards their demands, made at a meeting hosted by the National Labour Commission (NLC) on Friday, October 14.
The meeting was to settle the Fuel, Vehicle Maintenance and Off-Campus Allowances demanded by the four labour unions.

However, the leadership of the unions said at a meeting held on Thursday 8th December 2022, the Employer accepted that it had unilaterally varied the conditions of service of staff of public universities without recourse to them.
The employer has “assured to resolve all outstanding issues related to the conditions of service of the aggrieved Labour Unions.”

Meanwhile, in a separate letter cited by ATLFMNEWS today, the Ministry of Finance said following the conclusion of negotiations between government and the four labour unions, approval is granted for the payment of arrears on Vehicle Maintenance and Off-Campus Allowance for eligible staff of the unions.
This includes arrears for July 2022 to September 2022 to be paid in December 2022. However, arrears for October 2022 to June 2023 will be paid between 1st July 2023 and 1st November 2023.
