Once members accept the move, the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, GNAT, has revealed a proposal to carry out a housing program for members in the early part of 2022.
Kwame Pianim, an economist, told the 2021 GNAT Investment Forum in Accra that “teachers have the opportunity to buy 2-3 bedroom housing units at any place of their choice” if they choose to invest via the Teachers Fund, which has over 200,000 members throughout the nation.
The GNAT Investment Forum was formed to discuss the Association’s investment portfolios over the last 20 years, as well as how to diversify teachers’ contributions in a way that benefits them both before and after retirement.
Mr. Pianim utilized the meeting to suggest to GNAT “how members may own homes throughout the nation by selecting particular areas where different groups of members could retire in the future via collective contributions and investments in insurance and housing.”
He acknowledged the “difficulties current National Executives may face in obtaining buy-in from GNAT members” in adopting the comprehensive housing plan, but added that “the time has come for the Association to make initial sacrifices, as was done in establishing the Teachers Fund, to afford teachers” the opportunity to own homes by the time they retire.”
Mrs. Phillipa Larsen, President of GNAT, emphasized the need of “members supporting the National Executives and administrators to ensuring these commendable plans come to fruition” in order to assist teachers in retirement.
Thomas Musah, GNAT’s General Secretary, assured members of the safety and financial effectiveness of GNAT’s investments.
“Other companies invested in include TF Financial Services, Credit Mall Ltd, TF Properties Ltd, and lately Unique Insurance Company Ltd, Sweden Ghana Medical Center, and Aviance Cargo Ltd,” he added, in addition to the Teachers Fund.
The Minister of Education was represented at the GNAT Investment Forum by Deputy Education Minister Rev. John Ntim Fordjour.
