Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has disclosed that the government is preparing to change the name of Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport.
The proposed move would mark a significant shift involving one of Ghana’s most prominent national facilities.
Mr Ayariga revealed the plan while speaking to members of the media ahead of the opening of the Second Session of the 9th Parliament. He explained that the initiative is part of a wider government agenda aimed at aligning the names of public institutions with Ghana’s democratic ideals and evolving national identity.
“Government intends to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport,” he stated, adding that the change would be carried out through a bill to be laid before Parliament in accordance with due process.
The Majority Leader emphasised that any such decision must be supported by legislation and reflect the collective will of Ghanaians.
The announcement is likely to spark nationwide discussion due to the historical background attached to the airport’s current name. Once the bill is introduced, Parliament is expected to play a central role in examining and debating the proposal.
