The Komenda College of Education has matriculated 485 students consisting of 269 males and 216 females with a call to work hard and think critically to add value to themselves.
The ceremony enrolled fresh students into programs including Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, Agriculture, Mathematics/Science, Mathematics and ICT, Home Economics, Technical and Visual Arts.
While making the call, the Principal of the College, Very Reverend Dr. Kwesi Nkum Wilson also revealed the school’s plan to equip students with entrepreneurial skills and mindset this year starting with the students enrolled into the 2021/2022 academic year.
According to him, the Komenda College of Education, a co-educational institution is devoted to technological and general training in order to produce competent professional teachers for basic schools to meet the educational needs of the nation.
Addressing the matriculants, he said “Most of you have great ideas, so believe in yourself; you may never know the outcome of your efforts unless you do, because running a business takes a lot of time. You cannot be an entrepreneur unless you have a vision. Maintain a positive relationship with people who are already on the path you want to take.”
He further stressed the new paradigm of teaching the college has adopted which places much emphasis on the practical aspect of teaching.
“…why should we buy cleaning materials and detergents when we have chemistry departments, why should people sew our uniforms when we study clothing and textiles… you should have skills that will enable you set-up your own businesses after completion. The college’s mission is to assist you grow. I wish to challenge the teaching staff to go onboard and go along with me, vacation attachment programs are being introduced to augment our classroom work, this will be compulsory for every student.”
On her part, a senior lecturer with the Department of Communication of the University of Education, Winneba, Dr. Mavis Amo Mensah congratulated the matriculants and pledged that UEW will continue to maintain an excellent relationship with the College even as they work together to train quality teachers.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the event, the SRC president, Magnus Edward Awotwe called on government through the MCE and the Ghana Highways Authority to help fix the road which leads to the College.
