Kieran Steps Down as Fermanagh Football Manager After 5 Years
Fermanagh GAA have officially confirmed that Kieran Donnelly has stepped down from his role as senior inter-county football manager following a five-year spell in charge. The former Erne County player informed county officers over the weekend, bringing an end to a tenure that began in challenging circumstances and saw the team develop a strong culture and identity under his guidance.
Decision Confirmed After Weekend Talks
In a statement issued this morning on the Fermanagh GAA website, the county revealed that Donnelly held discussions with officials before confirming his decision to step away. His departure means he becomes the 12th inter-county football manager to leave his post following the 2025 season, highlighting the level of managerial turnover across the GAA landscape this year.

A Challenging Final Campaign
Donnelly’s final season at the helm featured both positives and frustrations. The team started the year in Division 3 of the Allianz Football League, having earned promotion in 2023 and hoping to push on. However, the campaign included a number of narrow defeats, including a painful collapse in their Ulster Championship clash with Down after holding a strong lead, and another late setback in the Tailteann Cup semi-final against Kildare, where two missed goal chances proved costly in the closing stages.
Tributes from the County Board
Fermanagh GAA paid tribute to Donnelly’s work over the past five years. In their statement, the county board thanked him and his backroom staff for their “dedication and commitment” and acknowledged the difficulties of managing during the Covid transition period and the introduction of new playing rules. Despite the absence of silverware, the county praised Donnelly for instilling a positive culture and environment among the senior panel.
Donnelly Reflects on His Tenure
Responding in the county statement, Donnelly said it had been an honour to manage his county. He thanked his backroom team for their dedication and expressed pride in the development and growth of the players throughout his time in charge. He also extended his best wishes to the players, supporters, and future management teams of Fermanagh GAA going forward.
Attention Turns to the Future
Speculation had been growing for some time that Donnelly would step aside following the defeat to Kildare. His assistant manager, Ronan O’Neill, has been linked with a role in Gavin Devlin’s coaching setup in Louth, although O’Neill has downplayed those suggestions for now. Fermanagh GAA will now begin the task of appointing a new manager to build on the foundations Donnelly helped lay.
