Ghana is considered to be one of the most secure countries in West Africa but the number of kidnappings has risen sharply in recent months, with the current one being the kidnapping of the Lands commission Officer in Koforidua causing a wave of anxiety among members of the public.
Some are asking whether the security apparatus and measure instituted to tackle criminal activities are not effective.
In an attempt to allay people’s fears, President Nana Akufo-Addo emphasized his government’s determination to put an end to the kidnappers’ activities.
Describing kidnapping and violent crimes as a new phenomenon in Ghana, President Akufo Addo said: “We need to do something about it to make sure this does not become a feature of our society. Decisions are being taken that will clearly manifest the determination I have to deal with this matter.”
It is in light of this that the Dean at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFSC), Prof. Vladimir Antwi Danso is cautioning Ghanaians to be security conscious.
He said “many people are not security conscious, the essence of security is beyond them. It is wrong to think that the Police should be the one to take care of your security; the police are as useless as paper if you and I do not help them.”
he emphasized that Ghanaians must make their own security their top most priority as the police cannot on their own protect everyone.
Prof. Vladimir Antwi Danso however maintains that, despite the rising figures, Ghana is still a relatively safe country for foreigners.
