The campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, is calling for disciplinary action against Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi) and Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC) over recent controversial remarks on the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.
Speaking to Citi News on September 28, spokesperson for the campaign team, Mr. Kwasi Kwarteng, condemned the comments, stressing that they undermine the integrity of the party’s electoral process.
Wontumi is reported to have suggested that the decision to hold the presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, was tailored to favor a particular aspirant. Abronye is also alleged to have claimed that he personally compiles the Bono Regional album and could use that influence to sideline some members.
The NPP leadership had earlier distanced itself from the remarks, noting that they did not reflect the official position of the party.
Mr. Kwarteng, however, argued that distancing alone is not enough and urged the party to take further steps.
“One would have expected that at the level and status of high-ranking members of the party, especially at the level of Chairmen, they would be guided by their role in the party. Unfortunately, whether they misspoke or not, such comments are a clear violation of the party’s constitution and undermine the unity and credibility of the process we are all seeking to have as a party,” he said.
He emphasized that Wontumi and Abronye’s positions on the National Executive Committee and National Parliamentary Council made their remarks even more troubling.
“They should be seen publicly to condemn those reckless and unfortunate statements made by these two individuals. And of course, we can also summon them to face disciplinary action because it’s a clear act of misconduct and a violation of the party’s constitution,” Mr. Kwarteng added.
The campaign team insists that allowing such statements to go unchecked threatens the unity of the party ahead of the crucial 2026 presidential primaries.
