Kennedy Agyapong, a lawmaker from Assin Central, has claimed that he opposes the free distribution of coronavirus vaccines to Ghana.
He believes that developed economies’ free vaccine distribution to developing countries would increase third-world countries’ dependence on them for assistance.
On Wednesday, March 10, the businessman spoke on his television channel, urging his fellow Ghanaian businessmen to rise up and help the government obtain the vaccines.
He said, “I’m not bragging, but I’m willing to give Akufo-Addo a million dollars to get the vaccinations.”
He said, “I don’t like the thought of always running to the developing world to beg for aid as though we can’t do something for ourselves.”
The Serum Institute of India donated 600,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines to Ghana.
When the shipment arrived at the Kotoko International Airport, the West African country became the first to receive the COVAX vaccines.
The World Health Organization has already expressed its support of the Vaccine Implementation Programme (WHO).
In a televised broadcast address to the nation on Sunday, February 28, President Akufo-Addo said, “The vaccine deployment plan we submitted to WHO, which unlocked this consignment, was well-received.”
“They have done an excellent job, and we owe them our gratitude. Naturally, we are grateful to the COVAX Facility’s donors and managers.”
