A Professor in Finance and Entrepreneurship at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Professor Daniel Adjapong says failure on the part of some Ghanaians to keep their huge sum of monies at the bank for safe keeping is not a good practice.
His comments come at the back of the incident involving the former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources,Cecilia Abena Dapaah.
Two domestic staff at her home, 18-year-old Patience Botwe and 30-year-old Sarah Agyei have been accused of stealing and stashing more than $1m in cash, €300,000 and several million Ghana cedis, as well as some personal items between the months of July and October 2022.
This disclosure has caused hue and cry in Ghana with many wondering how a minister could have such huge sums of money in her home.
Reacting to this development in an exclusive interview with ATL FM NEWS, Prof Adjapong expressed his sadness on how some Ghanaians have the habit of keeping vast sum of monies in their homes considering the negative implications it can lead to.
He thus advised that “if possible whenever we have any huge sum of money, we should send it to the bank for safe keeping because money kept at home can be stolen with ease like what has happened to the former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah.”
He further educated that when money is not saved at the bank, “the potency of the money dwindles” in that when we are ready to use it, it becomes insufficient for what we want to use it for.
“So, what this means is that we should all cultivate the habit of keeping our monies at the bank so that those who are legally authorized to oversee to the safe keeping of peoples’ monies can do just that.”
According to him, most people are guilty of what has happened to the former Minister – Keeping huge sums of monies at home.
Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has accepted the resignation of Sanitation and Water Resources Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, following public uproar over huge sums of money discovered at her home in Ghana’s capital city, Accra.
Members of Parliament have called for an investigation to verify the source of the money.
Madam Dapaah tendered in her resignation letter to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo barely on Saturday, 24 hours after news of some foreign and local cash stolen from her bedroom came to light.
In her letter, she said she intends to cooperate fully with all the state agencies to enable them fully establish the facts adding that she has no doubt that at the end of the processes it will be established that she has conducted herself with integrity during her period in public service.
The former lawmaker, however, admits she understands the import of such stories around someone of her stature.
