Medical workers at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi are in a tense situation as private developers take over their current residences, forcing them to find new accommodations.
The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council allegedly gave them a week to vacate their bungalows, which have reportedly been sold to private developers.
Dr. Paa Kwasi Baidoo, the Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Medical Association, expressed concern over the sudden eviction, noting that an agreement with Manhyia Palace for new housing arrangements had been disregarded.
The medical staff are rallying together to address this urgent housing challenge.
On the other side, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council explains that the relocation is part of a planned effort to shift all government workers to a designated area near Danyame and Nhyiaeso, which were handed over to Manhyia Palace.
Meanwhile, the Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, clarifies that the relocation aims to provide better accommodation for the workers rather than forcing them out against their will.
While the medical workers fear losing their homes, the government maintains that the adjustments are part of a broader plan to improve housing conditions for employees and to ensure a more organized allocation of state lands in Kumasi.
“A portion of state lands within Danyame and Nhyiaeso have been ceded to Manhyia and as a result, we have to relocate all government workers that live within that area.
“Some of the structures are sited on maybe an acre plot of land and in such instances, we demolish it and build more buildings to enable us to have enough places for the workers”, he assured.
