The newly sworn-in Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has pledged to relentlessly seek the support of parliament in matters of the budget of the judiciary.
She explains that to speed up the efficiency and effectiveness of the Judiciary system, so much more is needed for and from the judiciary than determination and avowed purpose.
The newly sworn-in Chief Justice adds that when it comes to the area of accelerated infrastructure in technology and innovative models of doing business with technology, she will also not fail to call on both the executive and the legislature.
But Justice Torkornoo also notes, “There is a need to increase the budget of the judiciary to allow us room to expand our infrastructure in the automation and digitalization agenda.”
Meanwhile, she explains there is a need for the judiciary to make itself accountable by increasing transparency in its processes and output of judgments on land ownership and laws that affect the economy and social stability of the country.
Justice Torkornoo adds that in order for the judiciary not to compromise the quality of justice, external stakeholders must harness the attention in the justice delivery relay for improving excellence in their services.
Chief Justice Torkornoo was responding to the remarks of President Akufo-Addo after she was sworn into office as the 15th Chief Justice of Ghana at the Jubilee House on Monday, 12th June, 2023.
In his address, President Akufo-Addo described Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as very qualified for the office she has been appointed to occupy.
According to him, it was an easy task to appoint her as the country’s new chief justice as she possesses the qualities to lead the Judiciary.
The president believes Justice Torkornoo who is the third appointee to the Office of Chief Justice since he assumed Office in January 2017 is capable of reposing public confidence in the Judiciary.
The 15th Chief Justice of the Republic takes over from Justice Kwesi Anin Yeboah who retired in May.
She has become the third female to occupy this esteemed office after Justice Theodora Woode and Sophia Akuffo.
Ghana’s Parliament officially approved the nomination of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as the new Chief Justice on June 7.
