Justice Torkonoo proposes transparency in workload data to address critiques of court judgments

Chief Justice Nominee, Justice Gertrude Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo has stated that the best way to deal with suspicions and critiques on judgments passed by the Supreme Court and its subordinate courts will be to put the data of their workload in the public space.

She suggested that these suspicions and critiques may be created from the absence of knowledge on the entirety of the work of the Supreme Court and politicians who blow their cases out of proportion.

She indicated that the best way to curb this social critique is to make public the judicial working data.

“I think that an excellent answer or an excellent help tool will be to constantly put out the data on our work. The data will help us. Because honestly, the number of cases that involve persons in the political space are so few compared to the work we do.”

“Perhaps the ordinary citizen doesn’t talk too much about what they have in court, and maybe those in the political space talk a lot about what they have in court and that is why that is there. And putting out the data will help to give a sense of proportion.”

Justice Gertrude Torkonoo said this during her vetting by the parliament house appointment committee as the Chief Justice Nominee.

President Akufo Addo nominated Justice Gertrude Torkonoo in April 2023 to succeed the 14th Chief Justice in Ghana, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah after his retirement from service on May 24, 2023.

If approved, Justice Gertrude Torkonoo will be the third female Chief Justice in the history of Ghana after Justices Georgina Theodora Wood and Sophia Akuffo.
