Eighty Majority Members of Parliament have called on the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo to as a matter of urgency sack the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta.
The press conference, addressed by the Member of Parliament for Asante-Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi also demanded the removal of the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen.
Addressing the press on Tuesday, 25-10-2022, the group said the recent development of the economy is of great concern to them as the greater majority caucus members as well as their constituents.
The group however attributed the quick economic downward turn to the mismanagement of the economy and abysmally performance by the finance minister, Ken Ofori Atta, and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen, hence the call for their removal.
“We are by this medium communicating our strongest desire that the president changes the minister of finance and the minister of state in the finance ministry without further delay in order to restore hope in the financial sector and reverse the downward trend in the growth of the economy.
The summary of our concern leads to a plea that the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori Atta, and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen be removed from office”, the group stated.
According to these 80-majority caucuses of parliament, all attempts made through the necessary leadership to have the aforementioned persons removed from office have proven futile.
“We here so present, present a greater number of the said caucus. We had had occasions to defend the allegations of conflicts of interest, lack of confidence, and trust against leaders of our finance ministry. We have made our great concern to the president through the parliamentary leadership and the leadership of the party without any positive response”
The group however threatened to abstain from any government business and to kick against the 2023 budget if the government fails to heed their call.
“We pray that this plea will be carried to the president at the presidency. We want to serve notice and notice is hereby served that until such persons as aforementioned are made to resign or removed from office, we members of the majority caucus here in parliament will not participate in any business of government by or for the president by any other minister. We hope that those of us at the back bench and members of the majority caucus will abide by this prayer. We are saying that if our request is not responded to positively, we will not present for the budget hearing nor will we participate in the debate”.
