President Akufo-Addo has praised women in Ghana on March 8; International Women’s Day (IWD) saying their contributions towards the progress of mankind and the country are duly acknowledged.
“Please allow me to acknowledge and appreciate the significance of the day and heartily congratulate women all over the world, and especially women in Ghana, for the role they play in realizing the dreams, cares, and aspirations of humankind and this great nation.”
Delivering the 2023 state of the Nation Address in Parliament today, he further acknowledged women leaders for their contribution to enhancing all sectors including the lives of men.
“The presence of women leaders at both the local and national fronts have advanced rights, enhanced equality, and in general, improve the living standards and quality of lives of all concerned, including that of men,” he said.
The 2023 international women’s day is celebrated under the theme; DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.
To President Akufo-Addo, the theme for this year recognizes and celebrates women who are championing the advancement of transformative technology and digital education.
According to the United Nations, women make up only 22 percent of artificial intelligence workers globally.
Also, a global analysis of 133 AI systems across industries found that 44.2 percent demonstrate gender bias.
The UN further states that a survey of women journalists from 125 countries found that 73 percent had suffered online violence in the course of their work.
To this end, the United Nations is calling on all and sundry to channel efforts to make the digital world safer, inclusive, and equitable.
“This 8 March, we are calling on governments, activists, and the private sector alike to power on in their efforts to make the digital world safer, more inclusive, and more equitable. Facing a multiplicity of global crises, we have a chance to create a better future—not just for women and girls, but for all humanity and all life on Earth. Join us.”
Meanwhile, Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament while congratulating women after the president’s state of the nation address tasked the women caucus leaders in parliament to reach out to women within their various constituencies
He said “Today is International Women’s Day. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all our beautiful ladies here and all ladies in the world for partnering men to get us this far. I want to assure all the women that I am here for you. Honorable Members, as a result of that, with the request of the Women Caucus leaders in Parliament, I approved a facility for all our women here to proceed tomorrow to reach out to all women in their constituencies and women everywhere in the world. Honorable Members, this is part of the 30-year celebration, and I want all the main honorable men here to partner with the women to make an impact this year.
