A professor of Agricultural Engineering with University of Cape Coast, Prof. Livingston Sam-Amoah is urging Ghanaian farmers to invest in profitable irrigation.
He says local farmers and Ghana, as a whole, stand to benefit.
He explains irrigation is critical for any crop because it ensures that farmers have water in abundance and not depend on rainfall which at times vary in place and time.
He notes sustained irrigation assures farmers at the end of the farming season, large incomes.
Prof. Sam- Amoah told ATLFMNEWS though irrigation is faced with challenges such as the land tenure system, uneasy access to land for farming and irrigation, and the huge cost involved, it is important for farmers to invest in it.
He notes that “farmers can come together and invest in some of these equipment so that they can use them and share the benefits.”
Professor Livingston Sam-Amoah also called for collaborative efforts from government to make irrigation system a lucrative venture for farmers.
