Instagram is testing a new repost feature, allowing users to share posts, the company confirmed to TechCrunch on Monday. This development isn’t surprising, as the social network has been working on this feature since at least 2022.
Some users have reported seeing the repost option on their accounts, indicating that they will be able to reshare both their own content and posts from others.
While not everyone may welcome this change—given the platform’s existing array of content formats, including posts, Stories, Reels, Notes, and ads—many users might appreciate the ability to share and amplify engaging content, similar to functionality on other platforms.
Currently, users can share posts in their Stories, but the new repost feature will allow for resharing directly in Instagram’s Feed. Many users rely on workarounds or third-party apps for reposting, so an official feature would simplify this process.
For creators, the repost functionality could enhance their reach and visibility, as it would help ensure that original content is credited when shared widely. With Instagram already inundated with reposted memes and photos lacking proper attribution, this feature could benefit the creative community.

Given that other social networks, like Threads and TikTok, have adopted similar formats, it makes sense for Instagram to introduce reposting. The concept gained traction after Twitter launched its “Retweet” feature in 2009.
As with any test feature, it remains uncertain when or if Instagram will roll out the repost functionality to all users.
