A truck attempting to smuggle cocoa beans into Togo has been intercepted by officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at the Akanu Sector Command, with support from the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Customs Division.
Intercepted Truck and Seized Cocoa Beans
Acting on intelligence, the officers stopped a truck with registration number AS 2103-W at the Ave-Havi border post. Upon inspection, the vehicle, driven by Ibrahim Fatawu, was found carrying 1,115 gallons filled with cocoa beans, allegedly being smuggled out of the country. The interception marks yet another success in efforts to combat illegal cross-border trade, particularly in Ghana’s prized cocoa sector.
Official Confirmation and Actions Taken
In a statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Immigration, Michael Amoako-Atta, the GIS confirmed that the intercepted cocoa beans have been handed over to COCOBOD officials, who oversee Ghana’s cocoa sector. The truck has been impounded, and the driver is currently assisting authorities with investigations.

“The Ghana Immigration Service is hereby issuing a caution to all would-be smugglers to desist from such activity since it negatively affects Ghana’s economy and results in a loss of revenue to the government,” the statement read.
Economic and Security Implications of Cocoa Smuggling
Cocoa smuggling remains a major challenge for Ghana, the world’s second-largest cocoa producer.
Illegal exports of cocoa beans deprive the nation of much-needed revenue, disrupt supply chains, and threaten the livelihoods of farmers who depend on regulated cocoa sales.
Authorities have intensified surveillance along border posts to curb the practice, especially during the main harvest seasons when smuggling activities peak.
Appreciation for Community Support
The GIS acknowledged and appreciated the collaboration of local border communities, whose vigilance and support play a crucial role in protecting Ghana’s borders.
Security agencies continue to encourage citizens to report suspicious activities that could undermine national economic interests.
Authorities have assured that investigations into the recent smuggling attempt will be thorough, with further updates expected in the coming days.
