The Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (IEPA), UCC has marked the 2024 International Day of Education at Cape Coast School for the deaf and blind.
The International Day of Education 2024 observed annually on January 24 is the sixth celebration so far which was celebrated while centering on the theme “Learning for Lasting Peace”.
The Director for IEPA, Dr. Michael Boakye Yiadom, told ATLFMNEWS that the theme for this year is one that seeks to promote transformative peace through the empowerment of learners.
He emphasized that this can be done through quality education which constitutes acquisition of knowledge, values, attitudes and skills.
Dr. Michael Boakye Yiadom further expressed the need for consistent efforts to quell violent conflicts, particularly in light of the recent instances experienced within schools.
“At this point in our lives, we are witnessing conflict almost everywhere in the school system. We have students sometimes fighting over simple things like pens and pencil. The theme for this year is so important; But learning for peace will not happen unless we make an intentional commitment to make it happen.”
Dr. Boakye Yiadom also encouraged students to play their role in promoting lasting peace in education.
He called on Parents and teachers to join in the fight to resolve issues of conflict in school and at home.
To him, this will promote lasting peace through education and learning.
“Let us work together and promote lasting peace through education, learning, and good teaching, and those who are writing the curriculum, also through the curriculum, make use of the art of life, and engagement.”
Meanwhile, the Head of Communication and Public Relations at IEPA, Nana Efua Rockson, revealed that IEPA serving as a UNESCO category two center, is actively contributing towards the attainment of UNESCO’s 17 global goals by 2030.
She explained that IEPA’s specific focus lies in supporting UNESCO’s goal 4, which centers on providing quality, inclusive education for all.
According to her, education helps citizens to live in harmony and co-existence irrespective of differences in ability among students.
“It doesn’t matter whether you are differently abled, you are able. Everyone is included when it comes to education, and everybody matters because when everybody is educated, we all become citizens and we are able to live in harmony and peaceful coexistence.”
Meanwhile, the Cape Coast Metro Director of Education, Mrs. Phyllis Asante Krobea commended IEPA for celebrating this year’s International Day of Education with Cape Coast School for the Deaf and Blind.
This, she says confirms IEPA’S pledge to uphold the SDG 4 which seeks to promote inclusive, equitable quality, and lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Mrs. Phyllis Asante Krobea pointed out education as the only solution to peace as she envisions peace not only in the absence of war, but also that sound mind that is enjoyed through the feeling of togetherness, the inward worth of being accepted by society and contributing to nation building.
She therefore urged educatorsto commit to recognizing the individual strengths of every child, fostering their development, educators, urges them to commit to recognizing the individual strengths of every child, fostering their development.
