The Director-General of the Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (IEPA) at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Michael Boakye-Yiadom is calling on Ghanaians to contribute their quota to the development of the nation’s education sector.
He says by doing this, the nation will be able to achieve the sustainable development goal 4 aimed at attaining quality education.
In an interview on the ATLANTIC WAVE on Tuesday, August 9, Dr. Boakye-Yiadom indicated that education is an important investment since it has significant benefits for a given country.
He asserted that despite being expensive, investing in the nation’s educational system is the best approach to transforming and improving the present education system.
However, he believes the success of the country’s education sector should not be the role of only the government but a national commitment.
“It’s all hands on deck; the involvement of the private sector, the business community, the involvement of local government, traditional rulers, and all of us. We must find ways to support funding education,” he said.
He further emphasized “a small percentage from business communities to support this and making sure that we hold people accountable for the use of these funds…leadership is important in all this conversation”.
Dr. Boakye- Yiadom also advocated for better teacher working conditions, a more practical educational curriculum, and the provision of facilities to enhance students’ practical training.
On the issue of promoting life-long learning and critical thinking in basic schools, a lecturer with IEPA, Dr. Clara Araba Mills called on educational stakeholders to as a matter of urgency incorporate into the curriculum activities or subjects that will enhance students’ innovation and creativity.
She said it is important that right from the basic school level, children are taught teamwork and also be allowed to create space for themselves to learn and be creative on their own.
