Winner of the 25th TGMA’s Artiste of the Year (AOTY) award, Stonebwoy, responded to the controversy surrounding the award before it was announced between him and King Promise.
For the first time since taking home the trophy, Stonebwoy claimed in an interview on TV3 that he was unaware of the social media controversy until a week before the event.
The eight-time Reggae Dancehall Artiste of the Year expressed his wish that the other nominees in the category would receive the same recognition as he and King Promise.
He claimed that the fact that only two of the six artists were given significant attention gave the impression that the other finalists had not worked very hard during the year in question.
“One thing I felt was like I wish the attention would be spread out across all the nominees because it was not only a Stonebwoy and King Promise thing.
“I felt that if the attention was extended to the other five or six nominees then it will now become a thing of fact. Limiting it to two artistes almost always takes away the fact that all nominees have worked and not just the two,” he said to Berla Mundi on Friday, June 7.

Stonebwoy thinks the top two candidates for Artiste of the Year shouldn’t be chosen by the public.
“Why I say that is that that is not for the fans to determine. The fans are only supposed to propel, propagate, project the works of the artiste under the year of review and then vote that is what I think they determine,” he added.
The hitmaker of “Ekelebe” clarified that the top two performers are solely determined by the Ghana Music Awards’ criteria.
He underlined that “a little bit of resentment and unhealthy competition” between the artists is brought about by the fans’ actions.
At the recently concluded Ghana Music Awards, Stonebwoy received 13 nominations and won six prizes, including the Reggae Dancehall Artiste and Artiste of the Year titles.
