Former President John Dramani Mahama claims that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government he led battled corruption better than the present one.
During his tenure, he claims that members of his own party who were proven to be guilty in the Ghana Youth Employment Development Agency (GYEDA) affair were punished, while other ministers who were involved in wrongdoing were forced to leave.
He said that such a development has yet to occur under Nana Akufo-Addo’s government.
“You have people who were in my government standing trial. Some of them have been sent to prison. So a lot of the corruption that is happening will be happening under the current dispensation. The Special Prosecutor is virtually his only instrument in dealing with corruption. Unfortunately, his first Special Prosecutor did not get the kind of cooperation he needed to be able to do the work that he had been given,” he said.
During his thank-you tour of the Northern Region, the former president told a Tamale-based radio station that the newly appointed Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, should remain impartial in carrying out his duties.
“We hope that those things will be corrected under this new Special Prosecutor, who is a young, enterprising lawyer. He has a fantastic career.”
Mr. Mahama and his colleagues also made a courtesy call on Dagbon’s overlord, Ya Na Abukari Mahama II, as part of their visit.
In his comments, the overlord praised the former president, who was the NDC‘s flagbearer in the 2020 general elections, for his leadership both during and after the polls.
The former President will also pay visits to the chiefs of Mion, Savelugu, and Tamale to express his gratitude for their assistance.
