The well-known musician from Ghana, Kojo Antwi, has disclosed that he canceled his yearly performances on December 24 at the National Theatre because of the inadequate upkeep of the space and its incapacity to hold his expanding creative vision.
He said he made the choice because the National Theatre had evolved into a space that was no longer able to support his own development.
Music lovers have long looked forward to one of the most popular events, Kojo Antwi’s yearly concert on December 24.
Since the concert’s inception in 1991, the National Theatre has hosted it; however, a few years ago, it was relocated to several locations, including the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), the Kempinski Hotel, Accra Mall, and the Labadi Beach Hotel.

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) hosted this year’s event, and once again, the renowned Kojo Antwi concert on December 24 was not held in the National Theatre. (Read Funke Akindele: “Divorcing twice doesn’t make me a failure.”)
Kojo Antwi recalled the warm attraction the National Theatre held in the early days of the event in a recent interview with Onua FM. This attraction has now been lost owing to inadequate maintenance.
“The place has fallen short of a theatre, maintaining the place has become difficult for those who are handling the theatre and as an artist, I don’t belong to a hall.
“… As an artiste, sometimes you become half full of a glass, sometimes, you get to the top of the glass, and sometimes when your ideas get wider, you outgrow the container. And I got to that point where I felt that the place wasn’t helping me.
“I did so many avant-garde things but an artiste doesn’t belong to a hall. I realised that the place wasn’t helping me so I had to move,” he stated.
