Mr Kwasi Amoako-Atta, Minister of Roads and Highways, has denied media reports linking him to a statement in which he blamed drivers for the substantial rise in road accidents in the country.
“The Ministry of Roads and Highways has been alerted to a media report claiming that the Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Kwasi Amoako-Attah, is to blame for the substantial rise in road accidents.”
According to a statement signed and released by Isaac Agyei Kwakye, the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer in Accra, the Minister never made such a statement.
According to the comment, the Minister stated that the building of good roads would result in more casualties due to driver indiscipline and overspeeding.
To emphasize what Mr Amoako-Attah said, the statement said that studies and evidence showed that human factors were responsible for more than 90% of road accidents.
According to research in Ghana, as roads develop, more motor accidents occur because most drivers take advantage of the ability to speed.
In a speech on the floor of Parliament, the Minister therefore urged his colleagues to help educate their constituents about road safety concerns.
According to the statement, media reports claiming that Mr Amoako-Atta blamed drivers for accidents were false and should be ignored.
“We hereby implore the public to ignore the Minister’s attribution,” it said.
