From the Pitch to the Boardroom: Baumjohann’s Big Sydney FC Impact After a successful playing stint with Sydney FC, Alexander Baumjohann has smoothly transitioned into a crucial off-field role where he’s now helping shape the club’s future. The former Sky Blues midfielder, who won both a Premiership and a Championship in his debut season, has become a key figure behind the scenes spearheading some of Sydney FC’s most significant player transfers in recent years.

A Switch That Changed Everything What many people forget is that Baumjohann was originally meant to bring that magic to Sydney FC’s biggest rivals, the Western Sydney Wanderers. After spells in Germany and Brazil, he was drawn to Australia by coach Markus Babbel. But once he arrived, things didn’t go as planned. Speaking on Takes from the Terrace, Baumjohann admitted he didn’t know much about Aussie football. It was Babbel who sold him on the idea, but reality didn’t match the promises. “It didn’t work out. Not everything he told me was true,” he said. It didn’t take long for Baumjohann to realise Sydney FC was the bigger, more established club and he jumped at the chance to switch sides after just one season.
A Career Reboot Almost Missed The timing was tight. His visa was running out, the rental lease was up, and he was close to signing with a Korean club when Sydney FC called. “We’d already packed our bags,” he said. But after a long meeting with Terry McFlynn and Steve Corica, he was convinced to stay. The decision paid off immediately, with silverware arriving in his first season.
Leading Sydney’s Future Now in a front-office role as Head of Player Management, Baumjohann oversees Sydney’s recruitment, youth development, and even the women’s team. His influence helped bring in one of the A-League’s biggest-ever signings Brazilian winger Douglas Costa. He personally reached out to Costa to sell him on the vision, not just the money. “We can’t offer what he’s used to financially, but we can give him the love of the game again,” Baumjohann explained. Costa, now enjoying his football again, has scored six goals and assisted five more in 25 appearances, even though the club missed out on the AFC Cup and A-League Finals.
Balancing Success and Development Baumjohann isn’t just focused on marquee signings. He’s helped shape Sydney’s youth-first approach, leading to major transfers like Jake Girdwood-Reich to St. Louis in the MLS and Hayden Matthews to Portsmouth. Even though Matthews’ departure hurt their defense, Baumjohann is proud of what they’ve achieved. “We’re still aiming to win trophies, but helping young players break through and move abroad is also success,” he said.
A Pathway for the Next Generation He believes this model will inspire more young players to join. Hayden Matthews is a perfect example he went from a scholarship contract to A-League starter, to Socceroo, to a record sale all within a year. “It can happen fast if you work hard and take your chances,” Baumjohann said. It’s clear that whether it’s finding global stars or nurturing local talent, Alexander Baumjohann is just as valuable off the field as he ever was on it.
