An Interlocutory Injunction has been obtained by an Accra High Court against the swearing-in of freshly elected executives of the National Union of Ghana (NUGS), which is scheduled to take place today, Thursday, April 14, 2022.
According to the petitioner, who is a member of NUGS, Daniel Owusu Baffoe, the elections were held in violation of the union’s constitution.
The applicant, a member of the Wisconsin International University College, also asks the court to prevent elected national leaders from claiming to be confirmed officials of NUGS.
According to the plaintiff, the claim is the consequence of a “clear breach of constitutional provisions of the NUGS Constitution prescribing the procedure to be followed in their election.”
In an interview with Citi News, Daniel Owusu Baffoe stated that he is seeking an annulment of the election results.
“The new constitution was to solve the issue of electoral fraud. But instead of the EC to go by the new constitution, it decided to go its own way.”
“Thus the entire electoral process is unconstitutional and should be nullified.”
Meanwhile, Julius Kwame Anthony, one of the accused, said he will confer with his attorneys about the next course of action.
Some NUGS officials have already expressed reservations about the election, which took place during the Union’s 56th Annual Congress at the GNAT Village in Ejisu Abankrom, Ashanti Region.
Julius Kwame Anthony, General Secretary of the NUGS, said that there were various irregularities during the election.
He stated that the election’s outcome cannot be deemed trustworthy in light of the irregularities that occurred during the process.
However, the Union’s President, Emmanuel Boakye, rejected the General Secretary’s claim.
The injunction was requested at a time when the Ghana School of Law’s President of the Students’ Representative Council, SRC, Wonder Victor Kutor, was accused of financial misconduct by council officials.
He has refuted the accusation of a conflict of interest in the purchase of a car, as well as running a mobile money center via his own firm and diverting funds.
