Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, says his ministry remains committed to working with health unions to deliver affordable and accessible healthcare, despite an unresolved apology from the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives’ Association (GRNMA).
His comments follow derogatory remarks made against him by GRNMA General Secretary, Dr. David Tenkorang Twum, on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen programme on August 26, 2025. The remarks were linked to an alleged assault on a health worker at Ridge Hospital.
Speaking in an interview on TV3, the Health Minister downplayed the criticisms, stressing that his priority is serving Ghanaians and not engaging in personal exchanges with union leaders.
“My target is the ordinary Ghanaian, the 33 million people and the over one hundred thousand nurses. As for the leaders and whoever said what, their motivation is up to them. I will continue to work with them and all union members to ensure that we build a health sector that is affordable, accessible, equitable, and sustainable,” he stated.
Mr. Akandoh also noted that incidents of this nature often distract from government’s policy focus but assured that steps were being taken to improve security for health workers.
He revealed that the ministry was collaborating with the Ghana Police Service to strengthen safety at health facilities nationwide.
“How can we beef up security in every hospital? We are looking at how district health directors can work directly with the police, whether superintendents or district commanders in their jurisdictions to provide support as and when needed,” he explained.
On infrastructure, the Health Minister announced plans to construct at least two CHPS compounds in every district, alongside efforts to close the regional deficit of six hospitals.
He indicated that areas already earmarked under the Agenda 111 initiative would be prioritized.
