The popular musician Guru, also known as Maradona Yeboah Adjei, is contesting his disqualification from the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) elections in 2024.
The UGSRC Electoral Commission rejected Guru on August 16, 2024, claiming his non-resident status as a violation of Article 4(d)(ii) of the Constitutional Instrument (CI 24)’s constitutional criteria.
If a candidate does not match the requirements, the EC claims that this rule renders their ability to run for office void.
In retaliation, Guru has petitioned the UGSRC Judicial Board for an interim injunction that would prevent the August 26, 2024, elections until the dispute is settled.
The petition questions the validity and fairness of barring non-resident students from running in the SRC elections, particularly given that the SRC’s choices have an effect on the whole student body.

“TAKE NOTICE that Council for and on behalf of the Plaintiff/Applicant herein praying for an order for interim injunction to restrain the Defendant/Respondent, their agents, servants, and any persons whatsoever authorized by them from going ahead to proceed with the election pending the final determination of this suit,” part of his petition said.
He contended that the judgment made by the UGSRC’s Electoral Commission is unconstitutional since they are not authorized to interpret and uphold the articles of the constitution.
His appeal argues that the Judicial Board, not the EC, has authority over the interpretation and application of the constitutional provision.
