Guinness World Records has responded to claims made by Ghanaian chef Ebenezer Smith that he holds the new record for the longest cook-a-thon by an individual.
On Tuesday, July 2, 2024, Chef Smith held a press conference at the La Palm Hotel where he declared that he had set a new cook-a-thon record, presenting a certificate as evidence.
“I am deeply humbled and honored to announce that I am now the new world record holder for the cook-a-thon,” he stated.
The certificate he showed reads: “The longest cooking marathon (individual) is 802 hours 25 minutes and was achieved by Ebenezer Smith (Ghanaian) in Spintex, Accra, Ghana, from 1 February to 6 March 2024.” However, in response to an inquiry from Joy FM’s Kwame Dadzie, Guinness World Records PR Executive Alina Polianskaya confirmed that Chef Smith’s claim is untrue.

The inquiry was prompted by concerns about the legitimacy of Chef Smith’s certificate and the lack of official confirmation from Guinness World Records regarding his alleged achievement.
“No, this is not true. He does not hold the GWR title, and that is not our certificate. The current and true holder of the record for the longest cooking marathon (individual) is Alan Fisher from Ireland, with a time of 119 hours 57 minutes 16 seconds achieved in Matsue, Shimane, Japan, from September 28 to October 3, 2023,” Alina stated.
