Afua Asantewaa, a social media celebrity, claims that Guinness World Records (GWR) broke their contract by revealing the outcome of her singing marathon before she was able to.
In a recent interview with GTV, she clarified that the terms of the contract she signed with GWR stipulated that she would receive notification of the findings so she could make the announcement to the public.
“In the contract we signed, until I decide to let it out, they can’t. There are so many things I have tried in the past that I willingly embraced failure (and) that brought me this far. So why would I hide the results from the public? No way,” she said.
Afua Asantewaa said she was unaware of the record attempt results as of Friday, February 23, when GWR responded to a tweet, citing her inability to read the email that GWR had sent out with the information.
She mentioned that she notified the GWR on February 12 when she couldn’t access the email, but they haven’t responded to her as of yet.
“As we speak, I cannot log in. And we had screenshots of it as if I knew this would happen. I lodged a complaint with them that I cannot access their website or my account so they should look into it for me because I need official documents, whatever they’ve sent to make a statement.”
Afua Asantewaa stated that after receiving a response from GWR, she and her team intended to make the results public.“What I understand is that everybody is emotional about this and anticipating a lot and I know that they wish that the results came from us. We were even planning where to break the news when we received it. We wanted to do a press conference and all that,” she said.
Afua Asantewaa’s quest to beat her record for the longest singing marathon, which she set in December 2023, was disclosed by the GWR on Friday. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), they stated as much, adding that they hoped she would try again despite the setback.

“We’ve seen how inspirational it has been for her fans…We wish Afua the best of luck with any future record attempts,” they noted.
They also said that Afua Asantewaa’s team received a reimbursement for the money they spent on a priority review.
“The evidence check had already begun before Afua requested priority service, so we refunded her payment earlier this month,” the statement read.
There were questions following their statement regarding whether the young woman had deliberately concealed the results and the fact that her money had been returned.
