President Akufo-Addo says Ghana is committed to reducing carbon emissions by 64 million tonnes.
This is part of the government’s efforts to protecting Ghana’s environment and address the need to combat climate change biodiversity loss and pollution.
Owing to the tragic heatwaves experienced in some African countries, president Akufo-Addo underscored the collective efforts by all to safeguard the environment.
“The science tells us that forests play a crucial role in sustaining life on earth and tackling the triple planetary crises,” he stated.
He expressed appreciation to Ghanaians for their participation in the annual Green Ghana Day commemoration which started 4 years ago.
He said the initiative captures the essence of the collective aspiration of Ghanaians to nurture the environment for the benefit of future generations.
Speaking at Burma Camp in Accra to commemorate the 2024 Green Ghana Day, he described the success of the initiative as an incredible achievement.
According to him, 42 million trees have since been planted.
“In the last three years with your unwavering support, we have planted some 42 million trees most of which are thriving. Today, we have the opportunity to add at least an additional 10 million trees bringing our total to 52 million trees in just four years. This is an incredible achievement”
“It is a clarion call for us to live a greener, better and more prosperous world,” he continued.
This year’s edition of Green Ghana Day is being marked on the theme “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow”
In the central region, 100,000 seedlings are expected to be planted in the Cape Coast Forest District, 250,000 seedlings in the Assin Fosu Forest District, 150,000 seedlings in the Winneba Forest District and 100,000 seedlings in the Dunkwa Forest District.
Government has allocated GHC1.5 million for this year’s Green Ghana Day.
The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor who revealed this at a press conference last Tuesday also acknowledged the role of the private sector in supporting the initiative.
Samuel A. Jinapor therefore called on all Ghanaians to actively participate in 2024 Green Ghana Day indicating the government’s commitment to sustainable forestry practices, ensuring the responsible manager of the country’s timber resources.
