The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong says the University has so far planted about one hundred and twenty-two thousand plant species.
He said the planting is to enhance the beauty of the school’s campus as it had been previously and to support the government’s vision to make Ghana a better place to live.
Professor Nyarko Boampong made this known while addressing the media at the Green UCC Tree Planting Exercise held on Friday, June 9, 2023, at the University’s campus in commemoration of the Green Ghana Day 2023.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, UCC has been working closely with the Central Regional branch of the Forestry Commission to observe the Green Ghana Day annually to populate the UCC campus with more plant species.
He, therefore, urged the entire University community, especially students to continually support the exercise and to cultivate the habit of Tree Planting.
“It is a good exercise and every Ghanaian should support the government so that we can build the Ghana we want”, he said.
To instill the habit of Tree Planting, Professor Boampong indicated that the University has introduced students to an agriculture programme where a portion of the University’s land is given to some students to cultivate it.
He hinted saying, “We give a portion of the land to the students to weed and also make sure that they plant trees”
The Green Ghana Day is a government initiative aimed at afforestation, and restoring Ghana’s degraded landscapes.
The project rallies people across Ghana to plant and nurture tree seedlings to green the country.
This year’s edition of Green Ghana is targeting 10 million seedlings nationwide while the over 30 million trees planted in 2021 and 2022 will continue to be nurtured together with the conclusion of this year’s edition of Green Ghana.
The 2023 edition is on the theme: Green Ghana: Our Forest, Our Health.
