The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) enforcement team has locked the Chinese retail outlet, China Mall, and its warehouses on Spintex Road and Ashaiman in the Greater Accra region.
The case stems from the company’s inability to repair its tax electronic collecting system so that the GRA could access the data.
On October 1, 2022, the GRA launched the Electronic VAT system to prevent tax leakages and determine firms’ actual income.
According to Joseph Annan, the Accra Area Enforcement Manager, the action was necessary after many attempts to persuade the company to comply with the law failed.

“This is just for them to fix their system for the electronic VAT. We have engaged them on several occasions to get this simple system fixed. The place shall be sealed and locked until they comply with the law. This is part of the Enforcement exercise which we are doing at all the China Mall branches.” he told Joy Business.
The mall’s management became aware of the situation and closed the shopping center before the Enforcement team arrived.
During the action, warehouse workers were protesting.
Mr. Annan indicated that the GRA will extend the practice to all China Mall outlets in the country.
