The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has requested a meeting of stakeholders to discuss an increase in transportation fares.
The letter, written by General Secretary of GPRTU, Godfred Abulbire and dated Thursday, March 17, 2022, directed Kwaku Ofori Asiamah to the February 21 statement issued in order to arrive at the recent 10% increment.
According to the statement, if international fuel costs surpass 10%, transportation fares might be reviewed.
“Meanwhile, the ex-pump price was 7.990 when fares were increased by 10% and currently fuel had been increased to 10.80 registering an increment of 33% as compared to the time the communique was signed.
“We are therefore requesting for an increment of 15% on lorry fares.”
The meeting will take place exactly one month after the decision to raise fares this year was made.
Petroleum prices have risen significantly since then.
However, the Ministry of Energy is said to be in negotiations with the Finance Ministry about possible ways to protect Ghanaians from global price hikes.
