Political marketing strategist Prof. Kobby Mensah has raised serious concerns about the government’s commitment to ending illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey”, in the country.

He argues that many government officials are deeply involved in galamsey, leading them to offer excuses rather than taking decisive action.

In a recent interview on Joy News, Prof. Mensah challenged the government’s claims that communities affected by “galamsey” would vote against them if they cracked down on the practice.

He asserted, “It’s a false narrative. They’re definitely not saying the truth, but then they’re using other kinds of narratives to actually push that narrative.”

Prof. Mensah pointed out that evidence, including reports from government-established committees, has shown the extensive involvement of government officials in galamsey.

He contended that the government’s claims about community backlash are misleading, stating, “The truth is that the majority of them are involved in it. They’re not prepared to stop, and so they’re using other narratives to push into the consciousness of the people.”

He emphasized that if the government truly wanted to address the galamsey issue, they could and would take action, noting that “If they want to stop galamsey, they would stop. If they want to push the laws to deal with people engaging in galamsey, they would do it,” he said.

Ultimately, Prof. Mensah believes the public is aware of the truth and sees the government’s excuses for what they are, which he describes as attempts to avoid accountability.
