Free Senior High School (SHS) Coordinator in the Central Region, Katakyie Kwame Opoku Agyemang says government has no intention to derail private schools with its 30% equity quota for candidates from public schools.
He said that this assertion raised by parents with wards from private junior high schools yet to get SHS school placement is untrue.
According to Mr. Opoku Agyemang, government introduced this initiative to create an enabling environment for public school students due to the inadequate infrastructure and logistics in government schools.
This, he says will also give public school students the opportunity to experience what goes on in category ‘A’ schools.
Speaking on TVUCC, he explained that government gives this 30% quota because it does not want public schools to collapse.
“Some of the second cycle institutions and the basic level are run by the government, and others in the private hands. So, you understand that if the public sector fails, then we are also in trouble. Are you saying we should deny those at the basic level the opportunity to assess some of the best schools which are being run by the government? Like Wesley Girls, Opoku Ware, Ghana National College? No. Government says, in order not to collapse the basic school, at least they should also have a feel of some of the best schools in the country which is being run by the government.”
According to him the 70% given for all prospective candidates is open to both public and private schools and students who qualify with good grades will be duly placed.
“The 70% is there for everybody to grab, whether private or public school. For the public schools, the conversation is that if you can’t fit in the 70, we have reserved 30% for you if you selected the school as your first choice” he added.
He further indicated that students who completed in the year 2020-2021 but were unable to go to school due to diverse reasons can bring their results to his office at the Cape Coast regional coordinating council, for placement.
Mr. Katakyie Kwame Opoku Agyemang added that prospective candidates who have not been admitted yet should keep checking on the dashboard for placement and urged parents to be patient with them.
He however said “the computer is made in such a way that the better your grade, the better schools you see. The school you get into depends on your grade. So, the one with aggregate 7 will find good schools in the portal than one with aggregate 40.”
He further advised parents to be extra careful of deceitful individuals and syndicates who charge money to help them secure placement into Senior High Schools of their choice.
