Alhassan Suhuyini, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North in the Northern Region, has slammed the government’s management of the power sector.
He said that the government’s “incompetence” in addressing problems in the sector was to blame for Ghanaians’ recent power outages.
Mr. Suhuyini, a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress, said that the Mahama administration had resolved almost all of the problems in the energy sector and had left a blueprint for maintaining such gains before leaving power.
Also packages obtained by the Mahama administration were lost due to the current government’s conduct, the Tamale North lawmaker said on Citi TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, April 29, 2021.
“The financial aspect of the energy market was fixed thanks to President Mahama’s insight and foresight. We fixed the generation side, then fixed the fuel side, and then strengthened the transmission side. This plant at Pokuase has been postponed for the time being.”
“We got the package as a result of the NDC’s talks with MiDA, but thanks to President Akufo-Addo and his government’s incompetence, we also lost the package owing to PDS. The NDC gave this government a full scheme, and all they had to do was work with what was provided to them, but we are in this quagmire because of arrogance, hypocrisy, and incompetence.”
On Wednesday, April 28, 2021, the Minority in Parliament chastised the government for its handling of Ghana’s control condition.

John Jinapor, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee during a press conference chastised the government for its inconsistency in communicating about the current power problems, which have resulted in sporadic power cuts throughout the country.
Mr. Jinapor observed, “It should be remembered that, apart from the intermittent localised blackouts, GRIDCo alone has provided six separate explanations for the big national outages since the beginning of the year, with the most ludicrous one being due to trees collapsing on high tension transmission lines.”
