Government employees have approximately a month and a half to register for the Ghana Card or their salaries would be withheld.
“Effective December 1, workers on the government of Ghana Payroll who have not registered with the NIA will not be paid,” a statement from the Controller and Accountant General’s Department warned.
According to the Department, it is working with NIA to create a unified database “to facilitate biometric and unique identification of all workers on the government payroll.”
This order, it said, was “part of the Government of Ghana’s efforts to deliver a speedy, secure, and verified payroll service to government workers and pensioners while reducing the risk of undeserving payment or claims.”
“By this notice, all existing and prospective Government workers are to ensure they are registered with the NIA and obtain their identity numbers,” the statement added.
Under the Akufo-Addo government, which has championed a digitization drive, the Ghana Card is gradually becoming a must-have.
It is presently necessary for mobile phone customers to register their SIM cards.
The National Health Insurance Authority is attempting to work with the National Identification Authority to enable all Ghanaians to utilize the Ghana Card for healthcare access.
The Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) of people provided by the Ghana Revenue Authority for tax identification reasons was also replaced by the Ghana card Personal Identification Number.
This move was in accordance with the government’s policy of utilizing a unique identifier for all transactions requiring an individual’s identity.
According to the National Identification Authority (NIA), approximately 15 million Ghanaians, or 84.3 percent of the population aged 15 and above, have registered for their Ghana Card.
