The government has announced plans to procure 500 new buses to boost the operations of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) and improve public transport services nationwide.
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe disclosed the initiative in Parliament on Thursday, October 30, 2025, describing it as part of the government’s broader strategy to modernise the public transport sector and support Ghana’s economic transformation agenda.
According to the Minister, the first batch of 150 buses is expected to arrive early next year, marking the initial phase of the rollout.
“Mr. Speaker, I wish to announce to this House that the company is in the process of acquiring new buses—about 500 of them over a short to long term — to augment our operations,” Mr. Nikpe stated.
He noted that Metro Mass Transit currently operates only 134 functional buses, a situation that has hampered its ability to expand routes and meet rising commuter demand across the country.

The new buses, he said, will be deployed across major and underserved routes to ensure predictable, affordable, and reliable transport services.
24-Hour Economy Support
Mr. Nikpe also revealed that Metro Mass Transit is already taking steps to support aspects of the proposed 24-hour economy by ensuring critical departments operate continuously.
“We are operationalising parts of the 24-hour economy, beginning with our vehicle maintenance department and traffic unit, to ensure our buses remain available and functional at all times,” he added.
Public Transport Modernisation Drive
The Minister emphasized that the procurement forms part of a wider government programme to:
- Modernise transport terminals
- Improve service quality and safety
- Strengthen route efficiency nationwide
- Create jobs within the transport ecosystem
The move is expected to significantly bolster Metro Mass Transit operations, expand accessibility for commuters, and reduce transportation burdens on low-income households.
Officials say the procurement process is ongoing and further details will be shared in due course.
