One thousand Special Forces have been sent to Bawku in the Upper East Region, where three immigration officers were shot at and one died as a result while attempting to get food in front of a police station.
The Special Forces’ presence is meant to boost security while also aiding the investigation for the killers who are still on the loose.
This was revealed by the Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, during an interview on Wednesday’s JoyNews AM Program.
“REGSEC, we are intensifying, government is helping us by bringing in Special Forces to Bawku, about 1,000 of them both police and soldiers.”
He added that “some are already at Bawku. Camps are already being built to house these soldiers.”

Other measures, he claims, have been put in place to improve regional security, but he declined to elaborate.
Mr. Yakubu urged members of the public and members of civil society to share any information they may have concerning the incident.
He asserts that Bawku authorities are working around the clock to make arrests even though none have yet been made.
“I can tell you that we are in control of the situation. Government is helping us otherwise it would have been worse than this,” he assured.
Mahama Ayariga, a member of parliament for Bawku Central, has condemned the assault on the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) employees that took place on April 3, 2023.
The lawmaker expressed concern in a news statement about persons being killed while performing their duty.
He did promise that an investigation would be done, though.
“This is most reprehensible and should not be repeated again. An investigation into the matter must be conducted and the perpetrators brought to book,” the April 4 release read.
