Google is largely reversing its earlier decision to discontinue support for all shortened goo.gl URLs, originally set for deactivation on August 25th. URLs that already display a deactivation notice will still stop functioning, as these messages were shown nine months ago for links that “showed no activity in late 2024.” However, all other goo.gl links will remain active and continue to work normally, the company announced on Friday.

Google, which stopped allowing the creation of new goo.gl URLs in 2019, initially set the August 25th deadline in July 2024, citing a decline in traffic for existing links—over 99 percent reportedly had no activity in the last month. In its recent announcement, Google acknowledged the importance of these links, stating, “we understand these links are embedded in countless documents, videos, posts, and more, and we appreciate the input received.”
