AI tools are praised for their ability to assist with research, coding, summarizing, and providing knowledge. However, they can sometimes struggle with simple questions. Recently, Google’s AI Overviews mistakenly reported the current year as 2024.

Multiple users noted this error when they asked Google what year it was, and a similar inquiry confirmed the year as 2024.

Google addressed the issue late Thursday, but did not specify the cause. A spokesperson stated, “As with all Search features, we rigorously make improvements and use examples like this to update our systems. The majority of AI Overviews provide helpful, factual information, and we’re actively working on an update to address this type of issue.”

Despite ongoing improvements, the AI Overviews feature has made notable mistakes, such as recommending users eat “one small rock per day” for vitamins and suggesting glue to help cheese stick to pizza. When launched in Hindi in India, TechCrunch found the answers often confusing.

Recently, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that AI Overviews are being used by 1.5 billion users across over 100 countries, driving more than 10% of search engine usage in markets like the U.S. and India. The company is heavily investing in promoting its AI-powered search and Q&A features.
