Numerous studies suggest that the rise of AI search features and chatbots is negatively impacting traffic to publisher sites. However, Google denied this assertion on Wednesday, stating that overall organic click volume from its search engine has remained “relatively stable” year-over-year, with slight improvements in click quality.
In a blog post, Liz Reid, Google’s VP and Head of Search, argued that third-party reports indicating significant traffic declines are often based on flawed methodologies or isolated examples. While Google hasn’t provided specific data to support its claims, Reid acknowledged that user trends are shifting traffic among different sites, leading to decreased traffic for some and increased traffic for others.
Google has been enhancing its search engine to provide direct answers and AI-driven “AI Overviews” at the top of results. Despite these changes, the company maintains that it is not fundamentally altering the search landscape. Instead, Reid noted that users are increasingly turning to sites with forums, videos, and podcasts for authentic perspectives.
Google has been aware of competition from platforms like TikTok and Instagram, which have become popular for younger users seeking recommendations. Additionally, Amazon has emerged as a go-to site for online shopping searches.

In response to concerns about declining search quality, Google introduced a “Reddit” filter to improve relevant search results. The company is also shifting its focus from sheer click volume to click quality, claiming it now sends “slightly more quality clicks” to websites.
Despite these claims, reports indicate that AI is not yet compensating for the lost clicks, with a Similarweb study showing that the percentage of news searches resulting in zero clicks to news sites has increased from 56% to 69% since the launch of AI Overviews.
In light of this trend, Google has introduced new products for publishers to help them monetize their traffic through alternatives like micropayments and newsletter sign-ups. This PR push to downplay concerns about AI’s impact on search traffic suggests that Google is aware of the challenges ahead, even as it asserts that it still delivers “billions of clicks” to websites daily.
