Android is no longer the main attraction at Google’s developer conference. While the platform is receiving its most significant visual update in years, Google previewed Material Three Expressive at a YouTube event prior to I/O. If a major design overhaul for the world’s leading mobile OS isn’t a headline at I/O, then AI surely is.
During the conference, which starts on Tuesday, we expect Google to discuss its AI initiative, Gemini, and how it will enhance products that consumers will notice.
In recent I/O keynotes, Android received minimal attention, with CEO Sundar Pichai repeatedly emphasizing AI. This trend reflects a clear industry shift toward rapidly deploying AI features.

Interestingly, the reduced focus on the latest Android OS may be beneficial. Google has prioritized rolling out new features to a broader range of devices, even those not running the latest OS. This change addresses past criticisms of slow feature updates that often left many users behind.
This year’s I/O could feel familiar, as many tech companies have held AI-centric events over the past two years, showcasing features that often face delays. However, Google has successfully introduced numerous AI functionalities across various platforms, including the anticipated XR glasses, Chrome, Gmail, and Meet.
We may be approaching a tipping point where the promises of AI efficiency are starting to feel less convincing. Nonetheless, it’s commendable that Google allowed Android to take the spotlight before shifting focus to AI innovations.
