The Trades Union Congress has asked the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta to go after the over 5,000 lawyers he claims have been evading tax.
Addressing the media on the sidelines of a 2021 Mid-Year Budget Review forum organised by the TUC and Friedrich Egbert Stiftung in Accra on Tuesday, Secretary-General of the TUC, Dr. Yaw Baah noted that such situations should not be tolerated by government.
“I mean if they have identified people who are making money and they have to pay taxes and they are not paying it’s only right that government does whatever it takes to make sure they pay.” He stressed.
Dr. Baah also advocated for the expansion of the tax net to rope in more taxpayers to ramp up government’s revenue, as well as the reformation of the single spine salary structure to ensure that workers were not short-changed.
“If we look at how much money we have spent to make sure the banks are paid, we should never make a mistake of going back to that state again, therefore the bank of Ghana itself must have to be reformed so that their supervision, regulation and monitoring is intact.”
