The Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association‘s 75th Anniversary Planning Committee, Godwin Avenorgbo, passed away last Monday. The GJA has stated that it would open a Book of Condolence in his honor on Monday, August 26, 2024.
For ten days, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Book of Condolence will be open at the Ghana International Press Centre on Gamel Abdul-Nasser Avenue.
This is stated in a news release signed by General Secretary Mr. Kofi Yeboah and dated August 21.
“Mr Avenorgbo, popularly known as ‘The Grandmaster’, was rushed to hospital from home after a sudden illness but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The death of ‘Big G’ came as a big shock to the GJA and the entire media fraternity in Ghana, and there has been an outpouring of tributes in his memory”, the press release stated.
It said, “The National Executive of the GJA, led by the Vice President, Mrs Linda Asante Agyei, visited the residence of the late renowned broadcaster at the Regimanuel Estates near Accra, on Tuesday, to commiserate with the family.
The National Executive expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for God’s strength for them in these difficult moments. They discussed ways of collaboration to give a befitting burial to the former Director of Radio at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).”
With commitment, enthusiasm, and energy, Mr. Avenorgbo oversaw the organizing and carrying out of the events marking the GJA’s Diamond Jubilee.

He talked passionately, as he always loved to do, at a commemorative lecture on the GJA’s birthday held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel last Thursday. Later, he walked to the dance floor and gave a passionate performance.
In addition to holding the position of Chairman of the GJA 75th Anniversary Planning Committee, Mr. Avenorgbo generously offered his services to the GJA for many years and in a variety of other positions.
“His sudden death is a huge loss to the GJA and the nation as a whole, and we are yet to come to terms with that reality; indeed, we are still shocked!” the press release concluded.
