The “Girls Trip” sequel is taking us to West Africa; be sure to pack your zip lines and grapefruits.
Writer-director-producer of the original 2017 comedy Tracy Oliver attended the Variety Studio at Sundance and gave an update on the upcoming reunion of Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Tiffany Haddish.
Oliver, at the festival to promote the second season of her Amazon Prime Video series “Harlem,” said she had a “definitive ‘Girls Trip 2’ update. That it’s officially happening. I can say that.” She also provided a plot update, and while the film’s producer Will Packer “might kill me, we’re looking to set it in Ghana.”
After Oliver revealed the information, actor Shoniqua Shandai, one of his “Harlem” performers, yelled “Afrochella!”

She is referring to the yearly Afrochella festival, which is Ghana’s largest cultural and musical gathering and takes its name from Coachella, an American flower crown festival.
The cast of “Girls Trip” will attempt to attend the festival, which has drawn notable musical artists from the area, including Shatte Wale, a collaborator with Beyonce. Oliver confirmed this. The production schedule is not yet known because Oliver has not yet turned in her script.
With a modest $16 million budget, the first “Girls Trip” was a big box office success, earning $140 million globally. The film was produced by Packer, directed by Malcolm D. Lee, and co-written by Kenya Barris and Oliver from a concept by Erica Rivinoja. It also helped Haddish, who was lately in controversy, become a household name.
Oliver has been on a festival tear the past year, premiering her acclaimed horror comedy “The Blackening” at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. The movie, directed by Tim Story, was acquired by Lionsgate on the heels of TIFF and will release this coming Juneteenth.
Meagan Good, Grace Byers, Jerrie Johnson, and Shandai’s “Harlem” will make its season two debut on Prime Video starting on February 3.
