The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North, Gifty Twum Ampofo has urged women to step up and take leadership roles in politics asserting that women have much to offer in that area.
She emphasized she has no regrets about venturing into politics owing to the many achievements she has chalked as a woman in politics.
The immediate Past Deputy Minister of Education touted her achievements and highlighted that in politics she has greatly influenced positivity resulting in significant achievement within her constituencies.
In an interview on TV3, on the topic: Women in Politics, the MPt for Abuakwa North emphasized her role as an MP facilitating road developments, and influencing and advocating for her constituent’s needs which to her has influenced life positively.
“…almost all roads in my constituency and other towns are seeing brand new road construction. Even if it could be done, once the contract was given, I visited too many people to make sure that other areas were added.
“That is the power of politics for me. So, once I have contributed my quota and when I look back, I don’t regret it because it helped me in supporting individuals for development, enlightenment, for upliftment.”
Meanwhile, Madam Ampofo bemoaned the unfair criticisms and societal biases often laid on women in politics.
She emphasized that women in politics are sometimes wrongly judged as arrogant, prostitute among others simply for being assertive and ambitious.
“Some things that they used to discourage and also to stigmatize women unnecessarily they accuse a woman in politics of not being married… She doesn’t consult. She’s insolent. That’s why she’s not married. If you don’t have a child, that is horrible,” she lamented.
The MP however urged women not to allow comments of that nature to hinder them from taking leadership roles in politics as they have much to offer to the benefit of many.
Gifty Twum Ampofo also emphasized the need for early advocacy and development of the girl child to know her worth.
She said young ladies in senior high schools must be encouraged to take up leadership roles highlighting the need to nurture their unique strengths and power to overcome challenges.
